Yard size to rolls needed

Enter your lawn dimensions to estimate sod rolls and see whether a sod cutter rental makes the job easier. Measure the area first, then compare coverage before you buy.

How the estimate works

Multiply length by width to get square footage. Add a waste allowance for curves and corners, then divide by the coverage of one roll to find the number of rolls.

1. Measure the area

Multiply the length by the width of each lawn section in feet. Add the totals to get your full square footage.

2. Add a waste factor

Add about 10 percent for straight edges. Curved borders and corners often need 15 percent or more to avoid gaps.

3. Choose sod or cutter

Use the total to order rolls. If you are removing old turf, a cutter rental can reduce the labor needed to lift it.

Measuring irregular lawns

Most yards are not perfect rectangles. Break the lawn into simple shapes, measure each one, and add the results together for a practical total.

Split into rectangles

Divide the yard into rectangles and triangles, then measure each part. This is more accurate than estimating the whole lot at once.

Measure curves carefully

For curved beds or borders, run a tape along the outer edge and round up. Extra sod can be trimmed, but a shortfall means another order.

Build in a buffer

Plan for a small buffer of 5 to 10 percent beyond the measured total. This covers trimming, uneven edges, and minor layout changes on site.
